The temple originated from a hall established by Kunou Tadao during the reign of Empress Suiko. During the Nara period, the monk Gyoki visited the site and named it Kunouji (Kunou Temple). It was relocated to its current site due to the construction of Takeda Shingen's castle. During the Edo period, it became a temple with imperial land grants (shuinji), but fell into disrepair during the Meiji period. After the Meiji era, Yamaguchi Tesshu restored the temple and changed its name to Tesshuji.
