The 'Yamao Nikki' (Diary of Yamao), written by the Yatabe clan who built Yabu Castle in the medieval period, records that a statue was found on the stern (to) of a ship that washed ashore at the beach of Kunii, Kawashiri Town. When the residents of the beach presented the statue to Yatabe Yamao, he identified it as having come from the ship of the deity of Kashima and enshrined it within the castle as a guardian deity. Later, the shrine was established at its current location on Funamiyama Hill and became the head shrine (so-chinju) for the domain.
