This Soto sect temple was founded in 1824 by the 39th abbot of Tokuji Temple, Shibo Gisan. In 1821, the Akita Domain granted permission for the temple name 'Tokkoji' and the mountain name 'Suigenzan'. The temple relocated to its current site in 1893. It enshrines the memorial tablets of 22 farmers who were victims of the Ono Nade-giri incident in the 9th year of Genroku (1696) and offers prayers for their souls.
