According to shrine tradition, it was founded in 733 CE (Tenpyo 5). It was originally located in the Odanaka area of Tsuyama City. After a fire in 1539 CE (Bunmei 8), it was relocated to its current site in 1604 CE (Keicho 9) by Mori Tadayasu, becoming the chief guardian shrine of the area below Tsuyama Castle. The current shrine buildings were reconstructed in 1664 CE (Kanbun 4) by the second domain lord, Mori Nagatsugu.
