According to shrine tradition, the origins date back to 555 CE (Kintoku 16), when the divine spirit manifested on Mount Hongu, leading to the construction of shrine buildings by imperial decree. During the Sengoku (Warring States) period, Tokugawa Ieyasu rebuilt the shrine buildings, and throughout the Edo period, successive shoguns contributed to its construction and donations. In the Meiji era, it was elevated to the status of a Kokhei Shasho (minor state shrine), and it is currently listed as a Hyakken Jinja (special shrine) under the Association of Shinto Shrines.
