The temple was founded during the Nara period by the monk Eki by imperial decree from Emperor Shomu. It was revived in 863 CE (Sagan 5) by Shengyou, a disciple of Kukai. After the temple was destroyed during the civil wars of the Kenmu period, it was restored in 1455-1456 CE (Kousei era) by Ninzen. In modern times, the property was purchased by the industrialist Kawai Yoshijiro, after which the three-story pagoda and the main hall were relocated to Sainen-en Garden in Yokohama City.
