『釈日本紀』によれば雄略天皇4年（475年）の創建と伝わり、『日本書紀』天武天皇4年（675年）条にも記述がある古社。戦国大名・長宗我部元親が永禄10年（1567年）に社殿再建に着手し、元亀2年（1571年）に本殿・幣殿・拝殿が完成した。寛永8年（1631年）には土佐藩2代藩主・山内忠義が楼門を造営している。
