Founded in the Kamakura period by Masayori Date in Kuwano, Mutsu Province, the temple received the protection of the Date clan. It moved through Yonezawa and Iwadeyama before relocating to its current location in the North Hills of Sendai in 1598 CE (Keichō 3). It was regarded as the highest-ranking branch temple of the Sendai domain. During the Meiji era, it ceded land to Aoba Shrine and was later rebuilt after a fire.
