The shrine is said to have originated in 1056 CE when Minamoto no Yoriyoshi and Minamoto no Yoshimitsu enshrined Toyokemitama-no-Mikoto to help farmers suffering from a poor harvest. In 1144 CE, Kamakura Gonoe no Keimasa was co-enshrined. In 1616 CE, the shrine was relocated to its current site during the improvement of the Oshu Kaido (Oshu Post Road). In 1868 CE, following the Order for the Separation of Shinto and Buddhism, the shrine was renamed Toyoke Shrine by combining the character 'Toy' from Toyokemitama-no-Mikoto and 'Ke' from Kamakura Gonoe no Keimasa.
