Its origins lie in the tomb of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who was buried at the summit of Mount Amida-gamine according to his final wishes. Initially known as 'Daibutsu no Chinju' (Guardian Deity of the Great Buddha) or 'Shin-Hachiman Shrine', it later received the divine title 'Toyokuni Daimyojin' from the Imperial Court and was named Toyokuni Shrine. Although once abolished by order of Tokugawa Ieyasu, it was revived by imperial decree of Emperor Meiji.
