In 1609 CE (Keichō 14), Ito Yūkei invited Rinnan Sūroku to establish Rinnan-an in Akasaka. The temple moved to its current location in 1636 CE (Kan'ei 13). During the late Edo period, it housed Japan's first British legation, but it temporarily declined due to attacks by anti-foreigners and criticism as a 'defiled temple.' In February 2010, the temple grounds were designated as a National Historic Site.
