The shrine was established in 1675 CE (Enpō 3) at the tomb of Hosokawa Tadayuki, the first daimyo of the Mutsu Aizu Domain. During his lifetime, Tadayuki expressed a wish to become a subsidiary shrine of Iwaki Shrine, which enshrines the deity of Mount Bandai, so that he could serve the gods eternally even after death. Consequently, it remains a subsidiary shrine of Iwaki Shrine. The shrine was completely destroyed by fire during the Boshin War. Reconstruction began in 1874 CE (Meiji 7) and was completed in 1880 CE (Meiji 13).
