Originally called Tsuki Benzaiten, the shrine was enshrined in a scenic area at the foot of the Musashino Terrace and worshipped as the tutelary deity of the Tsuki village. Due to the Separation of Shinto and Buddhism edict during the Meiji Restoration, it was renamed Itsukushima Shrine in 1875 (Meiji 8). It was later merged with the Tsuki Shrine located in Ichinokubo, Tsuki Village, and renamed the Village Shrine Tsuki Shrine.
