In the late Heian period, Emperor Go-Shirakawa, moved by compassion for the area, ordered the establishment of a shrine as a guardian deity. It was founded in 1160 CE (Eiryaku 1) with the cooperation of eight surrounding villages as the Jyu-gosha Shrine (Shrine of Fifteen Deities). In 1943, it was renamed Tsukushima Shrine. Although it was destroyed in the Great Osaka Air Raid of 1945, it was rebuilt in 1949.
