The name 'Tsuna-shiki' (spreading out a rope) originates from the story that when Sugawara no Michizane was en route to Dazaifu for his demotion, he encountered a storm. He was rescued by ancestors of the current shrine priest and used his fishing net as a mat upon landing. Michizane carved his own likeness and left a testament to be enshrined as a Soba-gami (a deity associated with the sea or waves) after his death. In 1720 CE (Kyoho 5), the current shrine buildings were constructed on this site by order of Matsudaira Sadayuki, the lord of the Iyo Matsuyama Domain.
