神武天皇即位の6年前、東征に向かう際に鎮祭したことに始まるという。承和4年に官社に列し、日向国第一の大社であったと伝えられるが、戦乱で焼失し衰退したのち、元禄5年に高鍋藩主によって再興された。明治4年に国幣小社に列し、現在は神社本庁の別表神社となっている。
