Oda Nobunaga was considered a descendant of the shrine's priests, making Tsurugi Shrine the ujigami (clan deity) of the Oda family. During the Edo period, it was patronized by the Fukui and Ono domains, and in the late Edo period, it became a prayer site for the Fushimi-no-Miya branch of the Imperial Family.
