Founded in Yamashiro Province in 974 CE (Ten'en 2), it was later enshrined in Uta District, Mutsu Province, by Taira no Masaharu. In 1551 CE (Tenbun 20), it was relocated to the site of Sendai Tokugawa Palace, and in 1667 CE (Kanbun 7), it moved to its current location at Tsuruoka Hill. Although most buildings were destroyed by a lightning-caused fire in 1795 CE (Kansei 7), the Karumon (Chinese-style gate) still stands today.
