Susanoo-no-Mikoto

History

According to tradition, the shrine was founded in 540 CE (Kinnin 1), though its exact date of establishment is unknown. It is a Shikisai (a shrine not listed in the Engishiki codex). In the early modern period, it received protection from the Oda and Toyotomi clans as well as the Owari Domain. Through the activities of the Tsushima Onshi (priests), the faith spread nationwide. Following the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in the Meiji era, the enshrined deity was designated as Taketsu Susanoo-no-Mikoto. Today, it is a Betsubyo Shrine under the jurisdiction of the Association of Shinto Shrines.
