It is said that the shrine was founded in 1196 CE (Kenkyu 7) when Otomo Yoshinao enshrined a branch spirit from Tsurugaoka Hachimangu. Due to flooding of the Oita River, the shrine was relocated east of its current site in 1201 CE (Ken'nen 1). During the medieval period, it was highly respected by the Otomo clan as the guardian deity of the province. In the Meiji era, it was moved once to Minami-Shinchi, but returned to its current location in 1921 CE (Taisho 10). In 2003 CE (Heisei 15), the shrine buildings were reconstructed due to road construction.
