The shrine began when a shrine was established within Yonezawa Castle following the transfer of Uesugi Kenshin's remains to Yonezawa. During the Meiji period, following the Order for the Separation of Shinto and Buddhism and the Abolition of Castle Orders, the shrine buildings were relocated to their current site at the former location of the Inner Palace of Yonezawa Castle. In the Taisho period, the current main hall and treasure house were rebuilt under the design of Ito Chuta.
