According to temple records, the temple was founded in 619 CE (Suiko 27) by Prince Shotoku. It is said that the Prince discovered this sacred site while resting his beloved horse and personally carved and enshrined an image of Kannon Bosatsu (Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva). Medieval documents indicate that the temple served as a branch temple of Toji (East Temple).
