According to tradition, the shrine was founded in the 12th year of Emperor Keiko's reign. Originally, it was established with Mount Yufu as its sacred mountain. It is recorded as a Shikinaisha in the Engishiki Jinmyocho (Register of Shrine Names) from the mid-Heian period. Until the Edo period, it was syncretized with the Buddhist temple Fusan-ji. In the 6th year of Meiji (1873), it was designated as a Kosha (village shrine), and in the 12th year of Taisho (1923), it was elevated to the status of a Kensha (prefectural shrine).
