The date of founding is unknown, but the shrine is said to have originated in 767 CE (Shinko Koun 1) when the deity Takekanusuchi remained in this area during the enshrinement of deities at Kasuga Taisha (Kasuga Grand Shrine). After the shrine buildings were destroyed by fire during the Tensho Iga Rebellion in 1580 CE (Tensho 8), the shrine was rebuilt in 1616 CE (Genna 2). The current main hall (honden) was built in 1870 CE (Meiji 3) and was completely destroyed by a fire in April 2026.
