History
In 674 CE (Hakuhō 4), Emperor Tenmu, following a divine oracle from Usa Hachiman, visited the area. Upon witnessing the appearance of purple clouds and a golden dove, he received an imperial decree to construct this shrine and was granted a wooden statue of Emperor Nintoku. It is the third oldest Hachiman Shrine in Kyushu after Umi Hachiman and Usa Hachiman, and was later revived by Minamoto no Yoritomo. It was designated a village shrine in 1881 CE (Meiji 14) and added to the list of provincial shrines in 1930 CE (Shōwa 5).
