The shrine originated as the birthplace of the Wakibi clan, enshrining their progenitor, Totsukawabe-no-Mikoto, as the founding deity. In 1591 (Tensho 19), the main hall was damaged by flooding and relocated to its current site. In 1909 (Meiji 42), additional deities were enshrined, including Otomohiko-no-Mikoto, Wakikyo no Kuramaro, Wakikyo no Hiromushi, and various gods merged from the Kuni-zukuri Shrine.
