History

The upper shrine (Wakasa-hiko Shrine) was founded in 714 CE (Wado 7). The following year, in 715 CE (Reiki 1), it was relocated to its current site. The lower shrine (Wakasa-hime Shrine) was established in 721 CE (Yoro 5) through a branch enshrinement from the upper shrine. During the medieval period, the Muku family, who served as shrine attendants, possessed extensive shrine lands. From around the Muromachi period, the center of worship shifted to the lower shrine.

What visitors say

Located in a populated flatland area, the shrine grounds have a simple charm and feature towering thousand-year-old cedar trees that seem to pierce the sky. The space is characterized by the cold water at the purification fountain (temizuya) and a gentle atmosphere covered with abundant water and moss. At the shrine office, visitors can receive Goshuin (calligraphic seal stamps) and purchase maternity belts for safe childbirth. Various sacred objects, such as Funadama (boat-shaped stones), are also enshrined in the vicinity.
