History
To console the spirits of war dead since the Boshin War, soul-summoning ceremonies were held at Tenkai-san within Oka Park in Wakayama City from 1880 to 1895. In 1937, the sacred precincts of Sunomaru within Wakayama Castle were donated, leading to the establishment of Wakayama Prefectural Rekotsu Shrine. It was renamed Wakayama Gokoku Shrine by order of the Ministry of Home Affairs in 1939. Although the shrine buildings were completely destroyed by fire in 1987, they were rebuilt in 1992.
