It is said to have originated in 1091 CE (Kanchi 5) when Kiyomizu Hachiman-gu (Kiyomizu Hachiman Grand Shrine) enshrined the Hachiman deity in the vicinity of Shiratori Village at the request of Kiyomizu Hachiman-gu's guardian general, Minamoto no Yoshitsune. Around the Tensho period, Yachi Castle Lord Shiratori Nagahisa moved the shrine from Shiratori Village to its current location and designated it as the guardian deity of the castle. It was formerly known as Hachiman Shrine, but was renamed Yachi Hachiman-gu when it was added to the list of special shrines by the Shrine Headquarters.
