It is said to have originated in 1091 CE (Kanchi 5), when Kuniyuki, the Shugosho Shogun, invited the deity Hachiman from Iwashimizu Hachiman-gu to the vicinity of Shiratori Village. Around the Tensho period, Yachi Ujiko, Shiratori Nagahisa, relocated the shrine from Shiratori Village to its current location. It was referred to as one of the 'Sangoku Hachiman' (Three Hachiman Shrines) of Sakegawa Province, alongside Sakegawa Hachiman-gu and Minoe Hachiman-gu. It was formerly known as Yachi Hachiman-jinja, but was renamed Yachi Hachiman-gu when it was listed as a Betsuhyo Shrine by the Association of Shinto Shrines.
