History

In 865 CE (Jogan 7), during a plague epidemic, a prayer for the expulsion of the plague was offered, and Susanoo-no-Mikoto was enshrined from Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto at Matsugashima-cho in Matsusaka City. In 1588 CE (Tensho 16), when Hideshige Gamou constructed Matsusaka Castle, the deity was transferred to the current location. In the Meiji era, the name was changed to Yakumo Shrine. In 1908 CE (Meiji 41), eleven other shrines, including Sugawara Shrine, were consolidated into this shrine.
