Yakuouji

The statue of Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha) that the monk Gyoki dedicated to Todaiji was later enshrined in Kamakura by Minamoto no Yoritomo. It survived the fires of the Kamakura campaign led by Nitta Yoshitsugu and was enshrined in its current location in 1333 CE (Genkō 3), marking the temple's founding. The monk Kakukei Taikō opened the temple, and during the Genroku period, the monk Baizan of Fukagawa Reiganji re-established it as a Jodo sect temple. During the Eiroku period, a statue of Yakushi Nyorai was excavated from a paddy field, leading to the area being named Tanaka-mura (Tanaka Village).
