In 1874 CE (Meiji 7), the town name was changed to Yamanokamicho, and the shrine was renamed Yamagami Daijingu. In 1907 CE (Meiji 40), it was designated as a shrine that offers divine food and offerings (Shinsen Heihaku-ryo Kyoshin). The main buildings were reconstructed between 1930 and 1932 CE (Shōwa 5–7). During the Battle of Hakodate, the shrine was also used as the residence of Matsudaira Sadayori.
