History
Yamagami Shrine is the site where Asama Shrine was originally founded and functions as its original sanctuary (Moto-miya). Worship was conducted here from its founding in the 8th year of Emperor Chūai's reign (circa 47 BCE) until its relocation in the 7th year of the Jōgan era (865 CE). It is believed that during the relocation, only one of the three enshrined deities, Konohanasakuya-hime-no-mikoto, was moved to the village shrine (Satomiya, now the main headquarters). The current shrine buildings were rebuilt in the 1st year of the Eiroku era (1558 CE) and are designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
