History

During the Muromachi period, a branch spirit from Ise Jingu was invited to Yamaguchi at the request of Ouchi Yoshioki. In 1518 CE (Eisho 15), the shrine received imperial permission from Emperor Go-Komatsu. The outer shrine (Geku) was constructed in 1519 CE (Eisho 16), and the inner shrine (Naiku) in 1520 CE (Eisho 17). Later, the shrine received the title 'Takane Daijingū' and an imperial plaque from Ise, eventually becoming known as Yamaguchi Daijingū.

What visitors say

This shrine allows visitors to worship both the inner and outer shrines simultaneously. The buildings are exceptionally beautiful, and the expansive grounds exude a sacred atmosphere. Visitors must climb stone steps to reach the worship area, and parking is available on the opposite side of the road. It is a popular spot for families celebrating Shichi-Go-San (a traditional festival for children aged seven, five, and three) and for viewing autumn foliage.
