In 1939, it was decided to establish a Kokugoku Jinja (Patriotic Shrine) in Yamaguchi Prefecture. The shrine buildings were completed at the current site in August 1941. Designated as a specified Kokugoku Jinja by the Minister of Home Affairs, the shrine jointly enshrined 7,159 war dead from Yamaguchi Prefecture who had previously been enshrined at Yasukuni Shrine on November 26 of the same year.
