Yamaguni Shrine
〒601-0323 京都府京都市右京区京北鳥居町宮ノ元1−1
A Shikinaisha (shrine listed in the Engishiki codex) located in Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City, with the former shrine rank of Fuha (prefectural shrine). It is a shrine deeply connected to the history of the Yamaguni Tai (Yamaguni Corps).
History
It is said that when the capital was moved to Heian-kyo (Kyoto), the Shuri-shoku (repair officials) constructed the main hall (honden) using timber transported by the Yamaguni Matsu (Yamaguni lumberjacks). Waki Yasumaro served as the head priest (saiju) and was granted the divine rank of Shōichi-i (First Rank) and the chrysanthemum emblem by Emperor Sanjo. The shrine was destroyed during the Genpei War and the Genkō Disturbance, but was repeatedly rebuilt by Emperor Go-Daigo, Ashikaga Yoshimitsu's vassal Hosokawa Yoshikazu, and Emperor Go-Yozei.
