History
Its origins trace back to Fujinami Shrine, built within Kōchi Castle in 1806 by Toyosuke, the 10th lord of the Tosa Domain, to enshrine Katsumoto, the first lord, his wife, and Tadamitsu, the second lord. Yamauchi Shrine was founded at its current location in 1871 (Meiji 4). It was refounded in 1935 (Shōwa 10) as a shrine enshrining Toyonobu and Toyonori. In 1970 (Shōwa 45), Fujinami Shrine was merged into it, making it a shrine that enshrines all successive lords of the Tosa Domain.
