History

It is said that Minamoto no Tameyuki enshrined a deity from Ishizumi Hachiman Shrine during the Chōkan era (1163–1165 CE). The shrine is also referred to as Wakamiya Hachiman Shrine. During the Muromachi period, it was rebuilt as the general guardian shrine of Ichibu Estate. It has been deeply revered by successive lords of the Owari Domain, including Oda Nobuhide (father of Oda Nobunaga) and Tokugawa Yoshinao. In the Meiji period, Tokugawa Yoshimitsu oversaw the reconstruction of the stone walls.

What visitors say

The shrine grounds are blessed with a lush forest, offering plenty of shade and a cool, quiet atmosphere even in summer. The grounds feature numerous subsidiary shrines, ponds, fountains, and sacred horses, providing many points of interest. Goshuin (shrine seal stamps) are available at the administrative office, but pre-written stamps are not offered, so you must bring your own Goshuin-chō (stamp book).
