The predecessor temple was founded in the early Heian period and was revived during the Kamakura period by the monk Geton Daishi Shun'ei. Supported by Emperor Go-Toba and others, the temple constructed a large complex incorporating Song dynasty ritual styles, completing the main structures in 1256 CE (Karakoku 2). It is the head temple of the Sen'yu-ji branch of the Shingon school and is known as a temple with ties to the Imperial Family.
