The founding date is unknown because records were lost in a fire. It is believed that Gozu Tenno (the Heavenly King of the Ox Head) was enshrined either during the construction of Shofukuji Temple in the mid-Kamakura period or during the construction of the Jizodo Hall in 1407, after which the shrine buildings were erected. In 1869, the shrine was renamed from its former name, Musashino Gozu Tenno Shrine. Under the modern shrine rank system, it was classified as a Village Shrine. In 1989, the shrine buildings were reconstructed due to the widening of the Fuchu Kaido road.
