History
Following the post-Meiji Restoration movement to establish shrines honoring the meritorious figures of the Southern Court, the Taishoguan (Grand Council of State) ordered the Kumamoto Prefecture to found this shrine in 1880. It was constructed on the site of the former Yashiro Castle, and the settlement festival (Chinza-sai) was held in 1884. It is one of the Fifteen Shrines of the Kenmu Restoration.
