Founded in 1881 (Meiji 14) by volunteers including Kotani Jinzaemon within the grounds of Hiya Hachiman Shrine to honor Hirata Atsutane, it was originally named Hirata Shrine. In 1909 (Meiji 42), the shrine purchased and renovated the Seihachiman Shrine located within Kuriyama Castle, added Sato Nobufumi as a co-enshrined deity, and changed its name to Yataka Shrine. It was relocated to its current site in 1916 (Taisho 5) and designated as a prefectural shrine in 1919 (Taisho 8).
