It is estimated that between 1542 CE (Bunmei 11) and 1547 CE (Bunmei 16), Suwa Yoshitomo, the lord of Suwa, invited the enshrinement of Suwa Taisha (Suwa Grand Shrine) to this location while wandering with the Chino (Chinoy) Betsu and Osawa clans. In 1582 CE (Tensho 10), it was re-enshrined as part of the territory of Suwa Yoshimizu. During the Edo period, it was known as Suwa Shrine, serving as the guardian deity of Narashi. In 1907 CE (Meiji 40), eleven nearby shrines were consolidated into this site, and it was renamed Yawatada Shrine after the name of the village at the time.
