According to shrine tradition, the Asuka Kannabi (divine guardians of the Asuka region) moved to this location along with the establishment of the Heijo capital, and this mountain was called Asukayama of Heijo. Originally serving as a guardian shrine at the Kimon (northeastern direction) of the Zendo-in temple of Gangoin Temple, it later received reverence from the Fujiwara clan and others as the guardian deity of the Dajoin temple of Kofukuji Temple. It is said that the shrine began to be called Yoga Jinja relatively recently.
