History

The founding date of Sugiyama Shrine is unknown, but a roof plaque indicates that Masuda Oe-no-Suke rebuilt the shrine buildings in 1376. During the Kan'ei period, Daikouji Temple served as its attendant temple, and in the second year of Meiji (1869), the shrine's name was changed to Sugiyama Shrine. Suitengu is said to have been founded during the Jōkyō period. At the beginning of the Meiji era, Kono Yashichi discovered the old site and revived the shrine. However, it was completely destroyed in the Great Yokohama Air Raid of 1945 and was later enshrined together with Sugiyama Shrine as a co-deity.
