Yoroji (Yoro Temple)

養老町養老公園1276−1

🏥 Health

This temple is associated with Gen Shounai, the source of the Yoro filial piety legend, and is said to offer benefits for longevity and eternal youth. It is also the 25th station of the Nishi-Mino 33 Sacred Sites pilgrimage.

History

It is traditionally said to have been founded by Gen Shounai during the reign of Empress Genmei in the Nara period, originally as a Hosso sect temple. The temple was destroyed by fire during the military campaigns of Oda Nobunaga. It was rebuilt on its current site by Ito Yumori during the Tensho era, and the main hall was reconstructed in 1597 (Keicho 12) with the support of Tokunaga Hisamasa, at which time the temple converted to the Jodo Shinshu sect.
