History
The temple's origins date back to the Nara period, when the monk Gyoki enshrined a statue of Kannon. It is said that in the early Heian period, Sakanoue no Tamuramaro constructed the main halls. Later, Minamoto no Noriyori built a three-story pagoda and other structures, but these were destroyed by fire during a military conflict. The temple was revived in the early Edo period by the monk Gyoukyo.
