History
It is said that in the Eiroku period, when Ota Shinrokuro, a retainer of Hojo Ujikatsu, was conducting a patrol, he excavated an ancient stele bearing a Lotus Sutra mandala. This auspicious omen led to the enshrinement of Hachiman Daibosatsu (the Great Bodhisattva Hachiman). After enduring the turmoil of the Genki and Tenno wars, the shrine came to be served by the betto (head priests) of Enchoji and Chojoji temples during the Keicho and Genwa periods. Following the separation of Shinto and Buddhism after the Meiji Restoration, it was designated as a village shrine. After its buildings were destroyed by fire in the war damage of 1945 CE (Shōwa 20), the current shrine buildings were constructed in 1959 CE (Shōwa 34).
