Another tradition holds that in the mid-8th century, the monk Manzen Jōnin constructed a prayer altar on the Atami beach; when the hot spring veins shifted inland, he enshrined the guardian deity of the hot springs. From the medieval period onward, the shrine was known as Yumae Gongen and gained widespread recognition as a deity for healthful bathing, as it was visited by successive shoguns and high-ranking officials of the shogunate.
